The Comox Valley has organized a cycling task force whose purpose is to co-ordinate cycling initiatives and ensure that this transportation mode is accessible throughout the Comox Valley.
The campaign’s focus is on cycling for recreation and commuting purposes with an overall emphasis on improving public safety.
The representatives are elected officials from Courtenay, Comox and Cumberland as well as the Comox Strathcona Regional District’s electoral area directors for Baynes Sound (Area A), Lazo North (Area B) and Puntledge-Black Creek (Area C).
On March 15, the terms of reference were finalized and include the initial priorities of the committee.
The three main objectives include education, recreation and transportation.
The cycling task force is gearing up for an introduction to the community through public engagement that will showcase the committee’s mandate, invite active participation and provide cycling safety tips.
The cycling task force will meet on a rotating basis in each of the members’ jurisdictions and all meetings are open to the public.
The elected chair of the committee is Ronna-Rae Leonard, City of Courtenay representative. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday April 19 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Courtenay council chambers.
